Ascender Diptych, 2006, Acrylic on Canvas (Diptych) 180" x 75". CCTV Surveillance System Installation. // Space Other, Boston, MA, 2006 // Wight Biennial, Broad Art Center, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 2006

This two-part installation consists of a large right-angle diptych (A) and CCTV surveillance system (B). The diptych depicts a complex ongoing narrative of the artistís mental model concerning fantasies for control, power, and collapse; in this model, individual personas become representatives for each fantasies. A live surveillance feed depicting the painting is displayed on a cctv monitor in another area of the exhibition.

The painting depicts an impending battle between ëBeowulfí who is aided by his lumpenproletariats (ìthe very best of usî) against the beast named ëGrendelí, who is presumed to be in his cave, which is rendered as a massive dark abstract shape that stretches across both canvases. In this mediated image, the painting has no ìcaveî, battle, hero, or social control technologies, only the mountain and a rendering of the artist wearing a furry ìbeastî hat while making a farcical beast gesture.
